ShirleyNAME: Shirley Horn

POSITION: Director of Communications & Marketing

HI!  I’M SHIRLEY. I’ve spent my whole career doing what I love, marketing everything from medical devices to almonds. After my second breast cancer diagnosis in late 2011, I knew I had to do something that made a bigger difference in the world. Joining the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation and being able to apply my energy, passion and years of communications experience to finding the cause and preventing breast cancer is a dream come true.

OUTSIDE OF THE OFFICE: I’m a member of the Los Angeles Pink Dragons, California’s first Breast Cancer Survivor dragon boat racing team. Dragon boat racing has been proven to be beneficial for breast cancer patients to keep lymphedema in check. It requires strength, stamina and perfect teamwork with 21 other women. I joined the LA Pink Dragons right after my final surgery last year and not only am I more fit than ever, but the camaraderie with my Pink Sisters is truly awesome.

I ACT WITH LOVE BY… sharing my story and encouraging all women to get involved in helping us find the cause of breast cancer and eliminate it. It’s a big goal, but we can make it happen if every woman, young and old, takes action, whether it’s by participating in a research study, joining the Health of Women study, or getting together with friends to help us raise funds to support research into the cause.

A FUTURE WITHOUT BREAST CANCER LOOKS LIKE: It means that women will no longer have to face the choice of either cutting off their breasts or living in constant fear that they’ll be struck down by this disease. It means that people would not get breast cancer so no one would ever again have to endure the surgeries, the brutal cures and the horrendous but unavoidable side effects of those cures. I’ve been there, and I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy. A future without breast cancer is a brighter, healthier and happier one.
